We weren’t planning to go to Lombok at first.
Bali had always been the magnet — rice terraces, surf, smoothies. But we wanted more. Not just pretty views, but something raw. Real. Off the usual trail. That’s when a fellow traveler at our hostel whispered, “If you want an actual adventure, go to Lombok. But get a local to show you around. It’s not the kind of island you can just Google.”
And that’s how we met Gus.
Our seven-day trip turned out to be the Lombok tour package for adventure we didn’t know we were craving. It was part road trip, part hiking challenge, part island escape — with a lot of laughing, sweating, and mind-blowing views in between.
Day One: The Unexpected Beginning
Gus picked us up from the port with a beat-up but super comfy van, blasting local tunes and grinning like an old friend. He handed us cold bottled water and a box of traditional snacks — banana fritters and something sweet I still can’t name.
“So,” he asked, “you want the soft adventure, or the real one?”
We looked at each other, shrugged, and said, “Surprise us.”
He chuckled. “Okay. We start with the real Lombok.”
And just like that, we were off.
Waterfalls, Winding Roads, and Wild Monkeys
Our first stop was deep in the north. Gus drove through hills and valleys, stopping whenever something caught his eye — a spice plantation, a waterfall hidden behind bamboo, a view of the ocean where clouds sat just above the horizon like something out of a painting.
We trekked to Tiu Kelep waterfall, which felt like walking through Jurassic Park. The spray hit our faces before we could even see the fall. Gus helped us navigate the stream — barefoot — holding our shoes above our heads, laughing the whole way.
There were no other tourists. Just us, jungle sounds, and that wild sense of this is real.

Day Two to Four: Trekking Rinjani’s Edge
We didn’t climb to Rinjani’s summit — we didn’t plan for that — but Gus organized a mini trek around its lower ridges, through local villages and coffee farms most tourists miss.
We slept in simple huts. Ate meals cooked over fire. Shared stories with locals who didn’t speak our language but still made us feel welcome.
One night, we sat under the stars on a hilltop, no city lights in sight. Gus made us strong Lombok coffee and said, “This island… it’s not just for holidays. It teaches you how to feel alive.”
That line stuck with me.
Day Five: South Coast and Secret Beaches
After the mountains, we headed south.
But instead of Kuta or the usual surf spots, Gus took us to beaches without names. I’m not even sure how he found them. We walked across dry fields, climbed down rocky paths, and suddenly — there it was. A stretch of white sand with nobody else around.
We swam. We napped under a tree. We found a beach dog who followed us for hours. Gus grilled fish over driftwood and told us ghost stories as the sun dipped into the ocean.
This wasn’t a package tour. This was something better — a customized Lombok adventure tour shaped by moods and moments, not by time slots.
Day Six: Island Hopping, Lombok-Style
We boarded a small wooden boat the next morning for a Lombok island exploration tour Gus called “The Lazy Loop.”
He took us to Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak, and Gili Kedis — the lesser-known Gilis. No loud parties, no traffic. Just coral reefs, clear water, and that soft, hushed vibe that makes you forget what day it is.
Snorkeling there was magical. Turtles swam by. Parrotfish darted in and out of the coral. My GoPro ran out of battery and I didn’t even care — some moments are better left unrecorded.

Day Seven: One Last Sunrise
On our final day, Gus offered us two choices: a fancy breakfast at a beach club, or waking up at 4:30 AM to hike a small hill for sunrise.
We picked the hill. Of course we did.
It was steep, sweaty, and silent. At the top, the sky shifted from deep blue to pink to gold. The island slowly woke up beneath our feet — roosters crowing, waves crashing, palm trees swaying like they were stretching after sleep.
We sat quietly, sipping hot tea Gus somehow carried in a thermos.
“I like this part the most,” he said. “The world doesn’t rush yet.”
Why It Worked
We’ve done guided tours before — some great, some rushed. But this Lombok adventure itinerary was different. It wasn’t rigid. It moved like a story. It flowed like a river. There was room to breathe, to change plans, to just… be.
Gus wasn’t just a driver. He was a planner, translator, trail guide, chef, and part-time philosopher. He knew when to talk and when to let silence do the work.
He knew his island like the back of his hand — but more than that, he loved it. And that love shaped the way we saw Lombok.
What You Should Know
If you’re thinking about booking a Lombok tour for thrill-seekers, or just want to feel like you’re part of something bigger than yourself, here’s my advice:
- Trust a local. Let them lead.
- Don’t try to see everything. Let the island unfold at its own pace.
- Say yes to detours. That’s where the best memories hide.
- Bring hiking shoes, curiosity, and a good attitude. The rest, they’ll handle.
We didn’t just go on a trip. We lived the island for a week. And it left a mark.
Months Later, Still Talking About It
It’s been months since we came home, but we still find ourselves saying, “Remember Lombok?” It’s in our stories, our photo frames, even the coffee we brought back.
Whenever someone asks for a recommendation, I just say:
“Find Gus. Tell him you want adventure. Then let him do his thing.”
